  • Notes
    • Quaker Meeting House in Kingston was situated in present Cataraqui, and its burying ground. After separation in 1881, property was the nucleus of the present Cartaraqui Cemetery. The Kingston monthly meeting at the house of John M. Hodgson in 1868. .. through efforts of Hodgsons and Webbs, there developed several years after the Separation of 1881, the Preparative Meeting of Sunbury. (Taken from A HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS) IN CANADA, by Dorland, p. 203.)

To Him must be given some of the credit for the establishment of the cheese industry in Storington Tp. He purchased Lot 2, Con 6 in 1878 and built a cheese factory which he operated until 1889. Also he leased property from Henry Van Luven in Battersea from 1880 to 1888 where he operated a cheese factory.
Carol Saari (carol@istream.com) noted that John M. Hodgson had 2 cheese factories, one at the corner of Montreal and Washburn Rd, and the other beside the creek in Battersea. This last factory, built in 1880 on property leased from Henry VanLuven, burned to the ground in 1885. Hodgson, discouraged by his loss and nearly bankrupted by unpaid credit allowed to his patrons, left for Manitoba in 1889 (Notes from Esther Mitchell).

In 1889 he sold his properties in Storrington Tp and moved his family to Manitoba. He rented a farm at Portage la Prairie for two years. He also bought and sold grain while there. He then moved south to the Hartney district, purchasing a farm which he farmed until 1910. On retirement they moved to Vancouver, B.C.

Funeral Service was conducted in the Hartney Quaker Meeting House, then body was shipped by CPR to Vancouver for burial beside his wife in Mt. View Cemetery.
